Detroit Redwings NHL Hockey Sports News and betting analysis

Avalanche-Red Wings 21st February 2006, 18:51
The Detroit Red Wings used a strong finish to make up for a weak start.

Tomas Holmstrom broke a tie with a power-play goal early in the third period and Detroit beat the Colorado \">Avalanche 6-3 on Sunday in the last game before the Olympic break for each team.

Detroit, which won its sixth straight, got a goal and two assists from Pavel Datsyuk and a goal and an assist from Holmstrom, Henrik Zetterberg, and Mathieu Schneider. Jason Williams and Brendan Shanahan also scored and Nicklas Lidstrom had two assists.

The Red Wings, who trailed 2-0 10:04 into the game, completed a four-game sweep of its season series against the \">Avalanche.

``We didn't get off to a great start tonight,'' Shanahan said. ``... But from the 10-minute mark of the first period for the rest of the game, we played a pretty strong 50 minutes.''

Dan Hinote had a goal and an assist for Colorado and Patrice Brisebois and Milan Hejduk got the other goals.

``It wasn't our best game,'' \">Avalanchecoach Joel Quenneville said. ``Technically, we didn't get a lot of things done. Against that kind of team, we've got to a play a perfect game from start to finish.''

Holmstrom chopped in the rebound of Lidstrom's shot 4:43 into the third period with Brad Richardson off for hooking to give Detroit a 4-3 lead. Zetterberg and Shanahan (empty net) added goals later in the period.

Datsyuk's 21st goal tied it at 2 for the Red Wings 6:51 into the second period. He beat David Aebischer from the slot. But Hinote restored the Avalanche's one-goal lead 2:49 later when he banked one in off Manny Legace from the side of the net.

Williams tied it at 3 with 9:17 left in the period when he redirected a pass from Brett Lebda in the slot.

``They've got a good hockey team,'' Colorado's Joe Sakic said. ``They move the puck well, we know we've got to play better against them, especially in the neutral zone where they pick up their speed.''

Colorado led 2-1 after the first period.

Brisebois opened the scoring at 5:35 with a slap shot from the top of the right circle that beat Legace. Hejduk made it 2-0 at 10:04 with his 16th goal. He beat Legace from the slot after taking a pass from Sakic, who had stolen the puck from Andreas Lilja behind the net.

``I didn't think we were playing terrible, but I didn't think we had the intensity the first 10 minutes,'' Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said.

Schneider got Detroit on the board with 6:07 left in the period with his 19th. He beat Aebischer with slap shot from the left point.

Red Wings-Fischer 13th December 2005, 01:56
Red Wings' Fischer thankful, but uncertain about future

Jiri Fischer couldn't control his emotions. Grateful he's still alive, the Detroit Red Wings defenseman is hopeful he'll play hockey again.

Whether he'll return to the ice won't be known for weeks.

``I'm really, really glad to be here,'' said Fischer, making his first public comments since collapsing on the bench with cardiac arrest during a game last month. ``Not too many people get a second chance like I did.''

Fischer cried, sniffled and took deep breaths as he spoke about the night he collapsed and a possible return.

``I don't foresee myself coming back in the next couple of weeks,'' he said. ``But this is what I know, what I've worked for my whole life. I don't want it to be taken away.''

During the Nov. 21 game against Nashville, team physician Tony Colucci said, Fischer collapsed with a racing, irregular heart beat, and after an auto defibrillator was used on the 25-year-old Czech, his heart stopped for an unknown length of time, as Colucci expected.

``It's basically like rebooting your computer,'' Colucci said of a heart's reaction to an auto defibrillator. ``It stops it and resets it.''

After performing CPR, Colucci said he detected a good pulse, and Fischer was taken from the arena by ambulance to Detroit Receiving Hospital.

``I don't remember going down on the bench,'' Fischer said. ``I don't remember anybody trying to save my life. I don't remember the ambulance much, but ever since I got to (the hospital), everything is just like it happened yesterday.''

Colucci said Fischer had cardiac arrest, which he said took the lives of basketball players Reggie Lewis and Hank Gathers.

Fischer is being treated with medicine, is undergoing regular tests and hasn't been cleared to play. Colucci said it would be premature to project a timetable for Fischer's return.

``The first question is, does he want to take that chance?'' Colucci said.

A week after collapsing, Fischer again experienced an abnormal heartbeat and returned to the hospital for treatment. He was released a few days later.

``I've been in and out of the hospital the last three weeks,'' Fischer said. ``I'm being monitored constantly and I've been doing some testing.

``A couple times I had to go back in the hospital because when I was at home, my heart rate raised out of the blue. I wanted to make sure everything was OK and stable, and it is.''

When Fischer was pressed on his possible return or retirement, he said simply: ``I'm 25.''

Fischer was diagnosed with a heart abnormality in 2002, causing him to miss two days of practice. When the 2002 result came back, Fischer was given a stress test that he passed, and he said his heart essentially is a little thicker than normal.

Fischer said he's constantly thankful just to be alive.

``I get up every day, and I live,'' he said. ``Everybody says you should live to the fullest, but what is it? No one knows until you come so close that you're not worried about anything else but being alive.''

Red Wings-Yzerman 13th December 2005, 01:54
Red Wings' Yzerman sidelined by groin injury

Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman is expected to be sidelined two to four weeks because of a groin injury.

Yzerman was injured Sunday in a practice, general manager Ken Holland said during Monday night during the Red Wings' game against Pittsburgh.

The 40-year-old forward played two of the first 10 games this season because of a groin injury, then was on the ice for 19 of 20 before being scratched Monday.

Yzerman has four goals and five assists in 21 games this season and leads all active players with 1,730 points in 22 seasons, all with Detroit.

Howard wins in his NHL debut 29th November 2005, 13:35
Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard finally got his chance to play in an NHL game and made the most of it.
Howard shrugged off a penalty-shot goal by Joe Corvo and stopped 22 shots in his NHL debut, including a breakaway by Eric Belanger, to lead the Red Wings to a 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night.

"The first five minutes I was nervous," said Howard, a second-round draft pick in 2003 who spent the previous two seasons at the University of Maine. "I was definitely jumpy out there and my legs just didn't feel right, but then I seemed to settle down and just tried to play my game. The first shot came, it was a deflection and I got it with my pad. From there on I felt really good out there.

"The guys helped me out a lot. They came back hard, broke up odd-man rushes and they cleared a lot of rebounds. They definitely made me look good. I'm 21 years old and playing my first game in the National Hockey League. It's something I'll never forget," he said.

Howard was promoted from AHL Grand Rapids after former Kings goalie Manny Legace sprained his left knee in Friday's 3-1 loss at Anaheim and was placed on injured reserve. His backup was 12-year veteran Chris Osgood, who surrendered six goals in two of his last three starts.

"Jimmy has all the athletic ability and the form that allows him to be pretty good," coach Mike Babcock said. "Is he mentally tough enough to do it in this league on a regular basis? I don't know, but we'll find out here. We'll give him a chance and see how long he can ride it."

Defenseman Chris Chelios ended a 57-game goal drought and Mathieu Schneider got the go-ahead goal during a power play in the second period. Steve Yzerman also scored with the man advantage and Henrik Zetterberg added a third-period goal, helping extend Detroit's winning streak against Los Angeles to nine games.

Nicklas Lidstrom scored into an empty net with 1:43 left to make it 5-1.

"They simply outworked us and were more physical than us," Kings coach Andy Murray said. "Their veteran players were very good tonight, and ours weren't."

The Red Wings did not allow a power-play goal for the first time in 14 games, as Los Angeles went 0-for-7 with the man advantage. The Kings are 0-for-21 over their last three games, after scoring six power-play goals in their previous three contests.

"It's just nice to kind of stop the bleeding in that area and finally put a zero up there," Kirk Maltby said. "They didn't get a lot of second and third chances. We had a chance to clear the puck out from in front of the net, and Jimmy made some nice saves. Hopefully, we can play a little better on the penalty kill, because specialty teams now are huge in the success of teams."

Schneider put Detroit ahead to stay at 9:37 of the second period, beating Jason LaBarbera with a screened slap shot from the right point for a 2-1 lead with nine seconds left on Tim Gleason's delay-of-game penalty.

Michael Cammalleri was off for interference when Yzerman made it 3-1 with his third goal of the season and 40th of his career against the Kings. The Red Wings' 40-year-old captain sat out Saturday's 7-6 win at San Jose to get some much-needed rest after a grueling schedule of games, practices and travel.

"I felt a lot better tonight than I did in Anaheim," Yzerman said. "We've been in Canada, back home for a few and then on the West Coast, and we just haven't had a break. So I just had nothing left to go play in San Jose. I'll just keep playing it by ear and see how I feel."

The Red Wings opened the scoring at 4:03 of the second period while the teams were skating four-on-four. Chelios knocked down Gleason's attempted clearing pass with his glove just inside the blue line and then stickhandled toward the slot and beat LaBarbara to the glove side with a 40-foor slap shot for his first goal since Jan. 16, 2004.

Chelios was using Maltby's stick after testing it out in the morning skate, where he broke four planes of glass.

"I think he was just kind of frustrated with his stick and he tried mine," Maltby said. "It was a similar curve from what he used to use, so he was happy with it and it worked for him tonight. I told him there's lots of goals left in that stick."

The Kings tied it at 7:39 of the period on Corvo's fifth goal. He was awarded his penalty shot when Maltby -- on his knees after getting turned around in the Detroit zone -- threw his stick in an attempt to knock the puck off Corvo's stick. Corvo made the most of his freebie, faking to his right and slipping the puck between Howard's leg and the right post.

Game notes
The Kings haven't beaten Detroit since Oct. 12, 2001. ... Detroit center Robert Lang played only nine minutes and played slightly more than six minutes altogether before injuring his groin in the second period. ... Detroit rookie Johan Franzen has six goals, the most by any player who hasn't recorded an assist. He scored in each of the previous two wins against the Kings.
